On instructions from you I asked Mr. A.R.Scott Foreign Office, whether he could give us any information about the Sino-British Cultural Association

He told me that this body was started some time ago, as far ashe could ally recall, when Sir Miles Lampson was Ambassador in Peking Chima It had received financial assistance from the Boxer Indemnity Committee Fund which was devoted to the building of a library in Nanking where the Association was also presented with a Club House by the Chinese Government. During the Sino-Japanese war it had moved from Nanking to Hankow, and then to Chungking.

It was a Society for the promotion of Anglo- Chinese friendship and relations, but its membership was confined mainly to officials on both sides. Sir A. Clark Kerr, H.M.'s Ambassador in China was President of the Association, and Mr. Han Li Wu, one of the Chinese Vice Ministers for Foreign Affairs was Chairman.

The Association was in fairly close contact with the British Council who found it a useful body for securing advice on Chinese lecturers for this country. The Association was also useful in making arrangements for Chinese scholars to proceed to Hong Kong University.
